Automation Today - 2-2009

Welcome to this edition of Automation Today

Manufacturing Convergence Combats the Global Economic Downturn
coping with the ever increasing demands from customers

Sustainability is a vital consideration, not only for industry, but also for its customers and the World in general. More efficient and less wasteful utilisation of resources – by every party at every possible stage of a product's life, from when the minerals are extracted from the ground to when it eventually gets recycled – is now becoming more important than ever.

For many manufacturers, sustainability is defined as "production processes and technologies that use minimal amounts of energy and resources, create minimal amounts of waste while leaving future production capabilities unhindered". But we know that sustainable production does not stop there; it goes further; addressing workplace safety, product integrity and reliability and reuse of waste products. It is our opinion that sustainability is a business imperative; one that will help make your operations cleaner, safer, more energy efficient and more competitive.

In our eyes, sustainability is part of a bigger picture – that of manufacturing convergence. This is the merging of traditionally separate functions and systems to create new capabilities within an organisation. Within this bigger picture, sustainability sits alongside productivity, innovation and globalisation as one of the four key market drivers that we are actively helping our customers address.

At Rockwell Automation® we see sustainability as an opportunity rather than a challenge; an opportunity to help our customers become leaner, greener, more profitable and above all stronger. This issue of Automation Today looks at some of the theories behind the words and shows some real life examples of customers that are implementing these strategies and demonstrating the real business benefits that they can bring.
